3 of the Most Common Decor Mistakes Homeowners Make

I love all things interiors. Fabric, paint, scale–interior styling is a canvas of endless imagination and expression. But I also love educating family, friends and clients about how they should adorn their homes and how they should not. Here are 3 of the most common decor mistakes homeowners make.

Curtain Placement

Curtains should kiss the floor but I see a lot of homeowners hang curtains that have too much fabric at the end or are too short for the window. Here’s a diagram that easily explains how your curtains should be hung and how they should fall.

Area Rug Placement

Another common mistake I regularly see is area rugs that are too small or incorrectly placed in a space. For living spaces, the area rug should either be large enough for all of the furniture to sit on, or large enough for the front legs of your sofa and arm chairs to sit on.

For eating areas, the shape of the area rug should match the shape of your furniture. If you have a round table, your area rug should be round. If you have a rectangular table, select a rectangular area rug. Here is a diagram which explains it visually.

Wall Decor Hanging Height

Finally, this is the mistake I see the most: wall decor that is hung too high. You want to be able to see and enjoy your wall decor! It should be hung eye level to the average height of the folks in the home. For my technical readers, a general design rule is that the center of your wall art should be 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Here’s a easy to follow diagram that showcases a few more art hanging tips.
